How to integrate trigonometric functions

Some trig integrals work by recognizing a derivative we already know. Others give us a logarithm. Let’s use the standard antiderivatives and see how an inside factor changes the result.

Use the standard antiderivatives

Trig antiderivatives with input u
IntegrandAntiderivative, plus C
sinu-cosu
cosusinu
tanu-ln|cosu|
cotuln|sinu|
seculn|secu+tanu|
cscu-ln|cscu+cotu|
sec2utanu
csc2u-cotu
secutanusecu
cscucotu-cscu

If the input is u=ax with a≠0, multiply the antiderivative by 1a. This is the factor from du=adx. Use each formula on an interval where the integrand is defined.

Integrate tangent with a factor inside

∫6tan(2x)dx=-3ln|cos(2x)|+C

Integrate a sum of different functions

∫(e4x-sec(7x)tan(7x)+5sinx)dx
=e4x4-sec(7x)7-5cosx+C
