How to integrate hyperbolic functions

Hyperbolic functions have their own list of antiderivatives, and the signs are easier to follow when we connect each rule to a derivative. We’ll use the list with an inside factor, then integrate an expression with three terms.

Read the standard hyperbolic antiderivatives

Hyperbolic antiderivatives with input u
IntegrandAntiderivative, plus C
sinhucoshu
coshusinhu
tanhuln(coshu)
cothuln|sinhu|
sechuarctan(sinhu)
cschuln|tanh(u2)|
sech2utanhu
csch2u-cothu
sechutanhu-sechu
cschucothu-cschu

When u=ax with a≠0, the substitution gives dx=du/a. Keep the antiderivative on an interval where the integrand is defined.

Integrate hyperbolic secant

∫5sech(3x)dx=53arctan(sinh(3x))+C

Integrate a sum one term at a time

∫(16x3-2sinh(3x)+4csch2(6x))dx
=4x4-23cosh(3x)-23coth(6x)+C
