How I create my videos

I often get asked what software and tools I use to create my videos. So I thought I'd put together an outline of everything I use. I hope you find it helpful!

Macbook pro

MACBOOK

I use a 13″ MacBook Pro with retina display. I prefer Mac to PC, but you can still use a PC to make videos like mine. I love the MacBook with retina display, because the high-resolution screen lets me make hi-resolution videos. Get MacBook

Sketchbook

SKETCHBOOK

Sketchbook is what I use to “write on the blackboard”. The blackboard is a picture that I import into the program as my background “layer”. I write out the problems on top of it. Sketchbook lets me write, erase, and change pen color. Sketchbook Express is the free version, and you can get it in the App Store. If you need more functionality, you can buy Sketchbook Pro, or get Pro for free when you buy Bamboo. Get Sketchbook Pro

BAMBOO

Technically, you can use your mouse to write and draw within Sketchbook, but I’ve tried it and it’s very challenging. A tablet like Bamboo by Wacom makes it infinitely easier to write and draw. It took me a couple of days to get used to writing with the pen tablet, but now it’s second nature. I love the Bamboo tablet. Get Bamboo

YETI

Now that I have the Yeti, I’d never go back to my computer’s built-in mic. Having good audio in your videos is so important and good audio makes the viewer’s experience more enjoyable. I wanted better audio in my videos, but didn’t have a lot of money to spend, which is why I settled on the Yeti and corresponding pop filter. For me, the Yeti is right in my price/value sweet spot; it makes my audio much, much better, but it's not super expensive. Get Yeti

SCREENFLOW

Screenflow by Telestream brings all the other pieces together. It’s the program I use to record my computer screen as I’m working out the calculus problems. Before I start on the problem, I set Screenflow to start recording. It records my screen as I work through the problem. When I’m done, Screenflow pulls up the video in editing mode so that I can start editing right away. It’s a powerful tool that’s easy to use. Get Screenflow
